Product Design with Fewer Limitations

An article about how Zuru development projects have fewer limitations because of the big picture thinking and large resources applied.

At Globex over the last 10 years, every project we have worked on have had significant constraints to them. Sometimes it’s a budget limitation with a start-up, sometimes the people involved fear new processes, sometimes it’s a timeline pressure due to commercial realities. Sometimes it’s all the above. What has made Globex great has been its ability to work within the constraints and come up with the best possible solution.

Working with Zuru Tech has been a different story.

Zuru Tech purchased my company Globex a little under 1 year ago now and it has been amazing to integrate with their growing team. It has taken some adjustment to expand my thinking of what is possible with Zuru Tech. I wasn’t aware of how many limitations were set as standard in my thinking like always having tiny volume to work with vs 100s of millions with Zuru Tech. If something moves the ball forward towards their goals, they are willing to give it a go. If a new process is needed and it is the best way to do something, experts will be found and brought in. If testing of a new idea is needed, they will build the R&D facility to do it at full scale. Having conversations where things like, “Don’t worry, we can buy our own ships if we need” can be a little hard to get your head around to start with.

If your ideas survive review by Mat Mowbray, the Zuru Tech CEO, anything is possible. 😊

I’m really looking forward to growing the team in NZ and heading towards getting amazing houses built in NZ the near future. If you’re not familiar with Zuru Tech, we are working on a ground up rethink of how houses are built. (www.Zuru.tech). It’s a full-on place working with the Zuru Tech team but disrupting an industry as old as building houses is never going to be easy. Many people have discussed the idea of turning buildings into production line products like in Refabricating Architecture, but we are doing it. Doing testing with the China office, discussing software with the Italian team or visualizing Industrial design with the US group are examples of things that I get do almost daily.

For the right people, Zuru Tech is a playground. If you want to have a global level impact on an industry, Zuru Tech is doing this at Its headquarters in NZ.
